ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors offer a bird’s-eye view that complements the detail they give about the interaction of technology with the psychodynamics of the therapeutic process in the several modalities that are considered. Their discussion sets the stage for detailed examination of our own experiences of distance therapy and delineates the context in which our private clinical and social experiences take place. But in the background of contemporary experience in the digital age lies this ubiquitous technology that affects the life of us all, not only in our practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis but in family life, business and social interaction. The use of text or email supports and interacts with our use of VoIP for conducting sessions for a patient who is in a different geographic location, travelling, too ill to leave the house, or who would miss sessions because of an ill child.
