ABSTRACT

In this era of global connectedness, there is great interest in using distance video platforms such as Skype (which is unfortunately still in use even though it is now known to be insecure), VSee Clinic or Zoom (both secure), as well as telephone, for conducting psychoanalysis and psychotherapy across geographic distance. The International Psychotherapy Institute has extensive experience in the use of videoconference and telephone technology in the teaching of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, including didactic teaching of infant observation, and individual and group supervision, with individuals and groups across the United States and overseas. Psychoanalytic candidates from unserved areas often permanently relocated to the larger cities where they trained, or would return to their home area to practise psychoanalysis in relative isolation. So the early distance learning programmes led to the development of the International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training, an advanced four-year distance learning programme, and the current online courses stand alone and also recruit for the analytic programme.
