ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author rightly points out “interesting speculations; however little is known about the practice and experience of ‘teleanalysis’ or conducting psychoanalysis through the assistance of the telephone or other high-quality video connection system”. The primary reasons for using technology were travel of one of both partners, followed by relocation during treatment and, easy to understand, intervening crises. The situation of analyst and patient each residing in a different location when initiating treatment was not as prominent as expected. The media of the exchange is secondary, but the rules of communicative coherence must be respected. Therefore communications need an agreed-upon frame concerning the place of the session, the time at which the session occurs, and the length of the session.
