ABSTRACT

Twenty-five years ago telephone analysis was subject deemed unfit to be debated in psychoanalytic journals. No practitioner dared bring up the idea except with friends and colleagues. Since beginning of psychoanalysis there have always been clinicians who quietly set aside many traditional psychoanalytic theories and techniques in order to help their patients have better lives. Many patients are accustomed to communicating through email at their work. Some others are afraid they would inconvenience the therapist if they attempted to make a spoken communication, which they fear might interrupt work with other patients. The initial intervention began before the email communication was even initiated. It could be inferred that Kächele was one who reached out to Susan by creating an online “box” for people experiencing grief. With email therapy there is hope that one day they will be able to risk fuller experience in person with another human being. From email to telephone to our office and back again and again.
