ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the written narratives of two justice-system involved adolescent males awaiting sentencing in a co-ed residential group home in the southeast United States. As part of a year-long critical ethnography, this chapter shares the stories of Dino, an African American 17-year-old, and Marc, a White 18-year-old. We utilize the theoretical perspective of masculine theory and the performance of masculinity to interpret their experiences. Through their art-based zines, both Dino and Mark sought to share their struggles on the street with a larger audience and consider alternative pathways in their lives.
