ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book demonstrates that once practice education is viewed as an essential part of the longitudinal socialisation and empowerment to a profession a more pragmatic stance can be taken on how students are prepared for practice beyond a single induction event. It highlights the importance of student preparation before placement as part of students’ long-term socialisation to their future profession. The book discusses a senior student’s involvement in preparing junior students for their practice learning experiences and provides examples of how peers can be used to teach clinical skills prior to placement to the benefit of both ‘learner’ and ‘teacher’. It considers the role of student nurse mentors, found both took a significant role in settling students into their placement experience and supporting their learning informally during practice.
