ABSTRACT

Scholarship is the business of the University of Botswana. The business of the Higher Education Development Unit is the enhancement of that scholarship by promoting staff development. In Botswana the idea that university lecturers can improve their teaching and other academic work through relevant training was accepted by the University of Botswana as early as 1986 when Dr. N. Boreham of the University of Manchester was commissioned to study staff development and university teaching methods. Activities related to the improvement of university teaching and learning received special impetus from various seminars and workshops held in Eastern and Southern African countries. Moreover, a network of like-minded individuals resulted in the distribution of an occasional newsletter, dedicated to University Staff Development in Eastern and Southern Africa. In July, 1996, the University of Kassel was proposing to offer a major staff development workshop for the Southern African Development Community at the University of Botswana, funded by the German Foundation for International Development.
