ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on observations made during a four-year research project on African–Asian transregionalization, for which we embarked on an empirical inquiry of African actors’ participation in Chinese–African gender politics. During our research we discovered that feminist responses to African–Asian transregionalization remain critical of current developments. Unlike others who unquestioningly support this form of South–South cooperation, they instead insist on experiences and norms of feminist transnationalization. As a team of African and European feminist political scientists, we have engaged in many protracted discussions on how we came to these conclusions. What came to light is that – in particular in the study of South–South relations – the positionality and location of researchers underpins a distinct difference that has otherwise been obscured by a shared interest in discovering feminist mobilization beyond North–South dynamics.
