ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter places the current book in the context of earlier projects on narrative and metaphor in medicine, politics and the law. All these projects draw on insights which stem from the claims made for narrative and metaphor as primary cognitive instruments nearly 40 years ago. It offers an overview of the contributions to this book under the headings: “Narrative, metaphor and learning,” “Narrative and metaphor in teaching a range of disciplines,” “Narrative, metaphor and the politics of education,” “Narrative and metaphor in intercultural education,” “Narrative and metaphor in the education and identity-formation of teachers and counsellors,” “Narrative inquiry needs metaphor, too.”
