ABSTRACT

The text Metaphor of the Subject is a short paper which provides an expanded formula for metaphor and demonstrates how the subject can be considered to have the structure of a metaphor. The paper thus provides psychoanalysts an orientation for clinical work and philosophers and linguists a ground for elucidating subjectivity. Throughout, Lacan engages with the discipline of rhetoric and emphasizes the link between the structure of language and the structure of the subject. In the field of psychoanalysis, Lacan was the first to argue for this link and to highlight the place of the subject. This chapter includes a detailed discussion of Metaphor of the Subject including explications of its numerous allusions.
