ABSTRACT
The problem regarding sustainability of agriculture in the Sahel (that is, the West African countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger) urgently calls for a solution: the livelihood of large segments of the population is in jeopardy. Therefore attempts to solve this problem through the development and introduction of agricultural techniques preventing soil degradation are appropriate (Comelisse, 1993).
