ABSTRACT

The Equal Opportunities Commission came into existence at the end of 1975. It was set up as a result of the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (which also incorporates the Equal Pay Act 1970). It is charged with three main functions and these are set out in Sec.53 of the Act, namely:

to work towards the elimination of discrimination.

to promote equality of opportunity generally between men and women.

to keep under review the working of the Sex Discrimination Act and the Equal Pay Act 1970 and when... they think it necessary draw up and submit to the Secretary of State proposals for amending them.
