ABSTRACT

London Survey’d, the work of the Survey of London 1894–1994 is the title of a centenary exhibition which took place at the Museum of London in 1994, and of an accompanying book by the Survey’s former general editor Hermione Hobhouse. Continuing change is an important aspect of the built history of inner London. The monographs and a few of the parish volumes were produced for the London Survey Committee by a mixture of amateurs and volunteers, among whom the most active and competent was the architect W. H. Godfrey. The historical depth provided through the documentary work of the Survey is of enormous importance for an understanding of London’s past, but its special strength is the way this history can be given a tangible edge through its integration with known buildings. The centenary history brings out well the tensions and problems created by the clashes of some of the personalities involved.
