ABSTRACT

The essence of theatre is the communication between people with complementary roles, the actors and the audience. Theatre evolves from storytelling. Theatre can be used in different ways to suit the therapeutic needs of the group. Even more impressive is a visit to the local theatre and all the ritual that goes with it. Theatre brings with it an expectation of standards and sometimes competition, so that selection and the needs of the group should be carefully considered. A group of drama students, actors or a community theatre could be involved to bring their professional expertise. Theatre does not necessarily need verbal communication and problems in this area can be overcome by dance drama. Theatre demands standards – the highest we can achieve – and should not be undertaken lightly. The group whose work is centred round roles and role play can find endless material in the theatre.
