ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is a detailed description of the reflexive self-talk intervention procedures. Reflexive self-talk interventions have received little scientific attention so far. In practice, however, we have gained extensive experience with the intervention in talent development and professional sports. Preferring a collaborative attitude in working with athletes, we developed a worksheet in the format of a board game that sport psychologists and athletes can work with. Together, sport psychologists and athletes are following 25 steps to improve the interaction between organic spontaneous and goal-directed self-talk to improve the process of self-regulation. Each step is illustrated with examples from our applied practice to prepare practitioners for possible answers they receive through the use of reflexive self-talk interventions with athletes.
