ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines how the professions have adapted to major changes in the structure and context of the contemporary public sector in Britain. It explores the idea and ideal of professionalism and individual professions have profoundly shaped the welfare state. The book demonstrates how that idea and ideal has been and is subject to serious challenges in the cases of the several professions. It also explores that policy makers are increasingly discriminating over sources of advice and willing to impose their own views on professional practice, especially as they struggle within an uncertain financial environment. The book examines the changing struggle of the professions to shore up their influence it is important to understand the strategic choices available to the leaders of the associations.
