ABSTRACT

The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by consensus in the United Nations General Assembly on 10th December 1984. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted on 20th November 1989. It was opened for signature on 26th January 1990 and 61 countries signed the same day, a record in the history of the United Nations. The younger, the Convention on the Right of the Child has beaten all records with the United Nations and after it went into force, nearly all of the Member States have ratified it. The main areas within the work in the Convention about children are: corporal punishment; street children; impunity of perpetrators; asylum-seekers; and armed conflicts. The two Committees cooperate on a secretarial level, and an account of their work is given in the respective Committees, so that the members of each Committee are informed of the work of the other.
