ABSTRACT

The name Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) first emerged as a response to increasing research and development activity associated with the augmentation of group work by computers. The issues are debates, and attempts have made to try and scope the field. A considerable body of knowledge already exists on the subject of ‘Cooperative Work’. The various terms can all be said to represent CSCW in one form or another it is important to have an understanding of where the concepts and philosophies diverge. To provide a coherent view of breadth of scope it is helpful to enumerate CSCW components in two categories – technology components and human components. Successful implementation of CSCW solutions demands not only that both technology components and human components are addresses but that they are addresses in an integrated fashion. The business environment continues to change rapidly; and that those changes are so great that companies have to revolutionise the organisation structures and operational procedures.
