ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the advances in technology and assesses the impact on video conferencing systems, on the desktop and in the conferencing room. There have been a number of technological advances that have impacted the video conferencing marketplace. The most important feature of desktop video conferencing is NOT that it is on the desktop, but that it is integrates into the user’s shared computer environment. The Integrated Services Digital Network standards as outlined by The International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee define two access interfaces known as basic and primary rates. Although the effect of video conferencing may be to replace specific meetings, net travel may increase because it leads to increased collaboration with distant parties. Evaluations should not be constrained to analysing how each individual interacts with the computer, but will have to consider the more complex issues of how the individuals interact with each other.
