ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss the historical background of my work with César Andrade, a former leader of the Latin Kings and Queens in Catalonia, Spain, and my efforts at producing a life history of this important individual. I draw on some of the interview data conducted during the last 15 years and highlight the main analytical and theoretical themes that I use to interpret César’s life trajectory and his self-understandings of his role in the “gang”, including his participation in the transformation of this street group into a youth association.
