ABSTRACT
Based on two decades of living and conducting fieldwork in Brazilian favelas, this chapter reexamines conventional notions of gangs, organized crime, and gang-related violence in Brazil. A brief description of the changing landscape of Brazilians gangs is provided, followed by a concise history of Brazil’s relevant prison-favela gangs.
