ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to discuss the concept of ‘deep cities’ by synthesizing the core ideas emerging from each contribution. It summarizes the tools and methods that can be used for unpacking the multi-layered, temporal layers of ‘deep cities’. The chapter deals with challenges in implementing the ‘deep cities’ approach in the context of sustainable development and outlines areas for further research. The approaches towards a heritage of absence, which is triggered by reflexive conceptualizations about the ‘deep city’, is also an aspect of smart cities, that means research on what digital heritage implies, in relation to urban transformation or change for understanding the city’s historical development and prospects. Digital ‘deep city’ models would be a tool for disseminating what is gone in the city and help reflection upon continuity and change by visualizing how parts or places of the city was fundamentally different in the past compared.
