ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on three areas. Firstly, on the implications of recent legal and policy changes on the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers, highlighting, in particular, the response of local authorities. It then identifies key issues in the mental health care of refugees and asylum seekers in the United Kingdom, drawing attention to the needs of particular groups and deficiencies in service provision. Finally, it considers some theoretical and methodological issues in undertaking research on refugees and suggests that there may be lessons to be learnt from studies of settled minority communities.
