ABSTRACT

Qualitative research provides a flexible array of methodologies that can be applied to the understanding of different aspects of psychotherapy practice. This paper offers commentary and reflection around the contribution of a set of qualitative studies included in the current issue of this journal. Conceptual and methodological issues are discussed in relation to the aims, methods and findings of these studies. Key themes that are highlighted across these studies include the relevance for psychotherapy of a focus on everyday life, the tension between description and theorising in qualitative inquiry, and the nature of human agency. Suggestions are made regarding possible strategies for enhancing the relevance and impact of qualitative research within the field of counselling and psychotherapy.
