ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of the experiences of a psychologist working over the past 30 years in psychiatric and forensic psychiatric hospital settings. Influences and challenges encountered by a psychologist starting as a unit based clinician, and evolving professionally to direct an APA accredited internship, chair a psychology department, and serve on a state Board of Psychological Examiners are described. The challenges encountered in clinical and administrative roles over the course of a psychologist’s career can be seen not only as descriptive of the unique experiences of one psychologist but as representative of the kinds of experiences faced by many professional psychologists working in hospital settings.
