ABSTRACT
This chapter describes some underlying issues involved in the challenges clinical psychologists face in their work in the mental health inpatient setting. The chapter suggests that clinical psychologists’ clinical acumen coupled with relational resources and an empathic stance, allows them to contribute significantly to the mental health inpatient setting’s provision of an integrated and person-centered treatment of the person. The chapter emphasizes the important role clinical psychologists can have in the future development of the inpatient system, in its movement toward a more person-centered and humanistic biopsychosocial mode of work.
