ABSTRACT

What is the promise of new mobility? What paradigm will cities follow in the autonomous future? What shape will they take as they transition to being more populous yet have greater demand for economic prosperity? This chapter grapples with the potential urban accessibility gains and the idea of planning for multiple scenarios in an uncertain environment. The chapter also discusses how today's companies like Uber and Lyft (often referred to as transportation network companies or TNCs) provide an opportunity to test loading and right-of-way dedication strategies. The chapter includes case studies for how cities can achieve sustainable transport futures.
