ABSTRACT

What are the range of impacts of new mobility on housing and real estate? Some of the most discussed promises from new transportation technology are not in the technology itself but in the ways the technology will impact the space outside the vehicle—the urban environment itself. This chapter focuses on land and housing. It dialogues the possibilities that smart mobility and autonomous vehicles create for space; how these innovations have the potential to free up land on a large scale. Finally, it evaluates how all of the land dedicated to streets currently might be reused and how they can become assets that can be used for societal good, as things like parks, bike lanes, or affordable housing.
