ABSTRACT

Young people have spoken clearly about the significant amount of time they spend with technology, particularly digital and social media. It is ubiquitous in their world and in every sense of the word. They described digital tools and the forms of life they were living through them. These young people detailed the meanings they make about these tools and ways of living online and through mobile phones. This concluding chapter presents a synthesis and summary of the messages shared by these young participants. Most noteworthy are consistent descriptions of deep tensions and conundrums they experience and navigate. They encounter challenges and opportunities that are summarized here in two categories that enliven our understanding of how structure and agency work for youth in the digital age. The first is about individual and collective agency of youth as they navigate emerging structures. The second illustrates these structures and ecologies of the digital age as they are lived by youth. These messages, when placed into context of key literatures reviewed in the book, demonstrate important directions for understanding the digital age with/for/by youth.
