ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues that the recognition and importance of the ‘chimera’ inscribed and visualised as ‘numbers’. It examines how educational ‘number-intelligent’ activities are co-produced in the tensions between society, politics and science. The book discusses examples of how the ‘chimera’ becomes the fulcrum around which educational activities are created, legitimised, disseminated and made ‘common sense’. Educational knowledge seems then to be independent on the ‘flesh, blood and mind’ of individual subjects and enters a ‘non-place’ of seemingly objective algorithms and ‘big data’. The book offers descriptions of activities taking place within a ‘number-intelligent’ rationality conjured by a ‘fear of being left behind’.
