ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the challenges of people ageing with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the supports and strategies that are necessary to facilitate them to age-in-place. Remaining autonomous and living in one's own home are common desires for people as they grow older. Yet the combination of normal age-related changes, accumulated neurological impairments, and related disability can make the experience of ageing with MS particularly challenging. It can also elicit a fear of the future. This chapter is essentially concerned with reviewing existing research findings on these issues to draw attention to what is needed to maximise the likelihood that people with MS will have a healthy and meaningful old age. The chapter argues that consolidated evidence indicates that current supports for older people with MS are limited and often cost more than people ageing with MS can afford. It cautions that these pressing issues should be addressed immediately so that people ageing with MS can do so well.
