ABSTRACT

Health declines related to ageing, increased morbidity, secondary conditions, and declining functional ability may influence the participation in everyday life activities for persons ageing with a physical disability. This chapter discusses potential changes in community engagement and participation that occur as a person with a physical disability ages. These changes in participation may be influenced not only by physical changes within the person (e.g. pain, secondary health conditions) but also factors in the environment (e.g. natural and architectural barriers in the home and community). Supports and services to address participation needs and engagement are discussed.
