ABSTRACT

In Germany, as in many other countries, support for older adults and assistance for people with lifelong disabilities are legally located in different areas of the social security system and financed by different funding authorities. But this chapter suggests that there is an increasing demand for age and disability to be taken into account together. The chapter argues that people with a lifelong disability as well as those who acquire an impairment in old age show similarities in experiences and share common interests. As such, there is a need for an integrated social planning of different sectors of help for older and disabled persons, for bridging knowledge, policy, and practice in ageing and disability to improve living conditions and social. This chapter outlines an approach to designing age friendly communities for older people with a disability, based on a model for an integrated community planning process that could help to bridge the disability and aged care sectors.
