ABSTRACT

After highlighting the ways in which the various stage and screen musicals set in or referencing Paris often act as a kind of ‘travel guide’ to the city, the opening chapter explains the general structure of the volume and briefly sums up the 18 essays that constitute its core. At the end, Olaf Jubin outlines the aspects of the topic not covered in the book and offers a number of suggestions where researchers may wish to venture next for in-depth analysis or re-discovery related to Paris, such as early stage hits, less famous Hollywood musicals of the 1950s, musical versions of classic French novels like The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and The Three Musketeers (1844) or Broadway or West End ‘flops’.
