ABSTRACT

French defence policy is structured by the concept of “strategic autonomy” and relies on an independent and large defence industry. The French defence industry appears to contribute substantially to national economic activity and the national innovation system. Although historically, this sector may have experienced a certain degree of stability, the situation has changed profoundly in recent years. This chapter reviews changes which have occurred and the main features of the French defence industry: the role played by the government, the importance of arms exports and industry performance. New challenges arise with the Europeanization of the defence industry and the political will to foster cooperation.
