ABSTRACT
This piece introduces the essays collected in this volume that deal mainly with the interaction between Telugu and English as reflected in the translations during and after colonization. The last essay deals with the transaction between Urdu and English. The essays deal with significant moments in this interface and cover the period from 1850 to 2000. They present a range of attitudes towards this interface and attempt to address the complexity of this interaction, in which modernity as being exclusively European or British is not always accepted implicitly.
