ABSTRACT
This chapter analyses the place of gender in translations in the Telugu language. It traces the matter historically and qualitatively. The premise is that though the translations started as early as the late nineteenth century, gender was not a criterion for translations from English or through English until the Feminist Movement gained momentum in the 1980s. Even then, it was more fiction than the Feminist theoretical books that were translated. The essay also gives glimpses of translations from Telugu into English on Feminist issues. Here again, there have been some qualitatively good ones, but the quantity is yet to improve. The chapter indicates that Telugu is still in need of a focused, organized programme of translating gender.
