ABSTRACT

This book is a collection of original papers aimed at contributing to the subject of welfare philosophy. The presentation of papers and the discussion were marked by openness and a willingness to consider the perspectives of other disciplines. The papers fall into two main sections, the first concerned with the growth and the grounds of social welfare, and the second with certain questions concerning what can broadly be described as the practice of welfare. The seminars intended to make a distinctive contribution to a new and growing area of study in a number of ways. Members firstly wished to extend conceptual analysis in areas significant for the justification of welfare. So, these papers are offered as one contribution to welfare philosophy and to philosophising about and doing welfare. It is a contribution that points in some forward directions as well as advancing presently emerging arguments concerning the growth, grounds and uses of social welfare.
