ABSTRACT

The final chapter in this book highlights the relevance for research focus on the impact of technology-mediated communication (TMC) during adolescence. Particular emphasis is placed on development during adolescence in tandem with the reported high level of TMC use among peers. The chapter draws together findings from previous chapters to examine some of the key questions in this domain, and explores evidence examining the impact of TMC on peer relationships and the potential for positive and negative effects. We also highlight the need for a balance between the benefits as well as some of the risks of using TMC, including cyberbullying, sexting and dating violence, and addiction potential. The chapter concludes with proposals for future research and theory.
