ABSTRACT
This chapter examines a recurring visual trope of the melancholy “vacant look” in Australian art and how it suggests a disorientated moral compass about race relations in the national psyche. Indigenous faces in these artworks travel back and forward in history, tracking the nation’s collective subconscious about racism, justice, and the politics of belonging, and might yet reimagine progressive politics.
