ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses children with vision impairment. It describes the implications of the Literacy Hour for these children, and ways in which they can be supported in shared, group and independent work. Like all children, those with vision impairment also benefit from the opportunities presented in the shared time for the teacher to extend pupils' knowledge beyond their current level of achievement. The use of different coloured pens and the colour of the background board or paper will vary with individual need but good contrast and clear writing will benefit the whole group. The literacy hour promotes group learning with the aim of supporting all children so they are able to participate confidently. In guided reading children have their own copy of the same book and read with the support of the teacher in small ability banded groups. Shared reading and writing are whole-class activities that should be interlinked and highly interactive.
