ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights opportunities to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Literacy Hour. The Communicating Strand for ICT and developing literacy are inextricably linked – whenever children write, they could do so using a word processor or desktop publishing package. A computer in the classroom is a great resource for both independent; group and class work and is too valuable a tool to remain unused during the development of literacy skills. It remains a great motivator and encourages collaborative work that can become more focused as children's attention is extended. Pupils with learning difficulties benefit particularly from being able to use ICT to reinforce their learning. There are few specific references to the use of ICT in the Framework for Teaching the National Literacy Strategy, yet there are many literacy activities which could be enhanced, and certainly made more exciting for pupils, by the use of ICT.
