ABSTRACT

The tasks need to address the National Literacy Strategy objectives which have been chosen for that specific block of work. They also need to be addressing the specific needs of the identified group of pupils. When planning the tasks, consideration needs to be given to the level of reading or writing that is involved and whether this would restrict the independence of some children. Matching work to the needs of each ability group, which lasts for the appropriate amount of time and is challenging, is quite a complex task. Promoting independence in the group activity part of the hour is not specific to children with special needs. All children need clear ground rules and strategies for working successfully together. Teachers can and have successfully differentiated work for a range of abilities when they have chosen to do a whole-class follow up activity.
