ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide information on some of the structured programmes and schemes which fall into this category. It focuses on those interventions which will fit in with the 20 minutes a day framework of the Literacy Hour. Most of them are about word and sentence level work; most of them are about reading rather than writing. The chapter looks at programmes aimed at children with reading difficulties which can readily be accommodated within the Literacy Hour – so long as additional adult help is available. Once children with reading difficulties have acquired basic phonological awareness they needs to work on basic phonic skills through methods which provide higher levels of structure, repetition and reinforcement than may be necessary. Soundworks relatively new multi-sensory phonological awareness and phonics group programme for five to eight year olds. The Literacy Hour structure allows children with literacy difficulties to spend time during the small group and independent time on individual or paired activities.
