ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways in which photography has been used to explore the human condition. It begins with examples of photographic practice in the nineteenth century for medical and social purposes and then moves on to the explosion of social media and photographic practices in digital technologies. Social media practices are considered critically. Photographic research methods are then outlined, with examples given of how images can be employed and what is distinctive about using them. The chapter then moves on to look at the rise of therapeutic photography and its role in the arts in health. The use of photographs for social critique is also outlined.
