ABSTRACT

In 1588 the English composer William Byrd gave eight reasons to persuade everyone to sing, believing that singing was beneficial for health. Byrd was remarkably prescient, but it is only four centuries later that his insights have been the subject of scientific enquiry and practical efforts to promote the provision of singing groups to promote health and well-being. The Sidney De Haan Research Centre, Canterbury Christ Church University, United Kingdom, has contributed substantially to these developments. This chapter provides a brief overview of findings from their research program on singing and well-being and the value of singing for people with long-term health conditions.
