ABSTRACT

Evidence documenting the therapeutic benefits and the positive impact of yoga on well-being, mental, and physical health has grown considerably in the past few years. This chapter focuses on Kundalini yoga, a more dynamic and energetic type of yoga developed to actively promote a revitalized and relaxed state of mind and body. Kundalini practitioners assert that this approach may be more suitable for those who have high levels of anxiety or trauma, or are resistant to talking therapies (e.g., counselling). Although yoga practice has been growing in the United Kingdom since the early 1950s, only 2% of the UK population practices any type of yoga regularly. Barriers, both real and perceived, include time constraints, lifestyle, costs, and negative health effects. This chapter provides two practical Kundalini yoga exercises to promote self-care and the promotion of health self-management.
