ABSTRACT

Musical composition, musical use of voice, and vocal music expression have long represented aesthetic embodiments of individual and cultural life, within numerous communities and societies. Each are ways in which people have shared artistic constructions of human experience and meaning, across numerous circumstances. Moreover, each has represented ways of promoting health and well-being, both in formal health-care circumstances, as well as in more everyday, community-oriented contexts. This chapter will provide an overview of the literature on the promotion of health and well-being through (1) songwriting and other forms of composition, and (2) use of voice and vocal expression.
