ABSTRACT

Research has shown that the risk for error or neglect in health-care settings increases during transitions, such as shift changes. This chapter offers discussion of and step-by-step instructions for two theater exercises that enable participants to practice handoffs of leadership and control in a low-stakes environment. Such exercises support the development of attention and a commitment to shared goals by guiding students through an embodied approach to learning. Readers will understand the rationale behind each exercise and its potential application in health-care and educational settings. In addition, readers will be able to adapt and employ the exercises for the purpose of training a variety of learners. The authors provide practical advice on introducing an arts-based pedagogy to those who may be new to such approaches.
