ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an introduction to macro talent management (TM) in India and gives insights into the contextual challenges in an emerging market, linking it to global talent management. The chapter provides a rich overview of TM, leading to present developments in TM, and provides guidance for TM in the Indian market. The introduction section is followed by a “bird’s eye view” of the historical, economic, and technological nuances of the Indian market. It explains the need for global talent management perspectives with changing demographics and millennial workforce challenges as a backdrop. This section provides a granular understanding of the emerging Indian market, which builds on its diverse, paradoxical background. We further enhance the understanding of TM with insights into the Indian talent management strategies, which evolve around talent acquisition and use of social media in the present market, enriched by the use of talent analytics and talent intelligence. This is followed by talent development strategies, weaving in the reality of the present shrinking job market and the need for retaining talent. We further build insights into talent pipeline development strategies and present the gaping talent leadership deficit in the present scenario. This chapter highlights the issues on what makes people stay in the APAC region, and finally we suggest guidance for pursuing TM in the emerging market of India.
